Ecosystems Beware! Warming Planet Unleashing King Crabs!
|
Due to the climate change from global warming, the barriers preventing king crabs from moving into the Antarctic peninsula. Scientists predict that if the crabs populate the Antarctic peninsula, they will completely restructure the ecosystem because of the native organisms' vulnerability to shell-cracking predators, thus threatening its biodiversity. During a joint U.S./Swedish expedition, scientists discovered that while the surface waters were too cold for the crabs, there were no barriers in the salinity levels that would prevent them from moving into the Antarctic ecosystem. As of right now, further research is needed to get a more clear perspective of the issue at hand.

ReflectionIt is no surprise to me that the climate change has influenced other animals to move out of their respective habitats. The danger king crabs present to the Antarctic peninsula's ecosystem is a great one. Biodiveristy ensures the survival of ecosystems as each different organism serves a different purpose that other organisms depend on. As I've already said, I believe we should change the way we live so that we can operate in a way that is energy efficient and less harmful to the environment in order to lessen the impact of global warming.
