NOTES- Coastlines contaminated with disease causing microorganisms from human and animal waste
- Coastal population increasing, forests/farmlands turned into resorts - Traces of fecal matter is the reason behind 85% of beach closures - Florida Keys septic systems can leak fecal microbes that can enter coastal waters within hours - Protecting downstream waterways from contamination can be done by preserving wetlands |
SUMMARY In recent years, the coastlines of the U.S. have been degraded by the increasing amounts of people moving there. The changing of forests and farmlands to resorts has brought a lot of people out to the coastlines, but it also brought more waste. They have been contaminated by human and animal waste from the people that moved there. Because of this, 85% of the beaches were closed for health reasons. As an example of the severity of the issue, leaks of fecal microbes from Florida Keys septic tanks can reach coastal waters in a matter of hours. A method of protecting downstream waterways from fecal contamination: preserving wetlands.

REFLECTIONHumans nowadays always tend to pollute and destroy every environment they inhabit. Improper disposal of waste from the humans/animals has lead to this issue that has been going on since 2004. I had no idea how many beaches closed because if this contamination. This should be brought to everyone's attention so that they are aware of their actions to prevent further contamination. I find it funny how this ties into the preservation of wetlands for natural water filtering, like we have studied before.
